About Colleen Cornelius
Growing up in a small rural town in Wisconsin has had a very strong influence on my work. There is a sense of pride that comes from living in the farm belt, a sense of pride for country and for hard work. That hard work is what made this country great and each of us felt we had a part in building it.
During my childhood Holmen Wisconsin was so small that it still had a general store with the wood floor. I can remember the creaking boards as we would walk from shelf to shelf. There really wasn't any "isles" there wasn't enough room. Later Holmen had a large population boom and the old general store has since become a distant memory.
Tire swings, old Ford pickup trucks, tractors and hay bails conjure a sense of nostalgia for me.
Photographs capture my memories and make them a tangible pieces of expression. But while I love to capture rural USA, I am also attracted to the industrial boom of yesteryear and the beautiful cityscapes that sprung from it. Many of those too have since gone; either forgotten or replaced. Old buildings, Rusted Cars Abandoned Factories; in the right light or darkness they take one last breath and I capture it.
This eclectic mix creates a unique collection of photographs that depict Americana.
